Kibble Topper Tuesday: Coconut Oil

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of the miracle that is coconut oil. There are over 1700 studies to date that prove coconut oil to be one of the most nutritious foods on Earth. Better yet, the numerous health benefits of coconut oil are also applicable to your dog. At BarkChef, we know the importance of feeding our dogs well. Coconut oil is pretty much the crème de la crème of kibble toppers, which is why we’re spotlighting it on our favorite day of the week; Kibble Topper Tuesday.

Around 62-percent of the oil in coconuts is made up of healthy fats called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Unlike other fats which have to undergo a 26-step digestive process in order to be turned into fuel, MCFAs only go through a three-step process. MCFAs make coconuts easy to digest, antifungal and processed by the liver, so they’re immediately converted into energy instead of stored as fat. Beyond its uses in the kitchen, coconut oil can be used to moisturize your skin, help burn fat and improve digestion.

For your dog, the MCFAs in coconut oil will help balance his thyroid, aiding in weight loss and boosting his energy. Giving Spot coconut oil can help clear up skin conditions like eczema or flea allergies. If applied topically, coconut oil can promote the healing of cuts and wounds as well as bites and stings. It also protects against fleas and ticks and helps to revive dry feet pads.

Coconut oil benefits your doggo’s digestion as well, improving nutrient absorption, diminishing bad breath, and killing parasites. It also helps build strong bones and promotes healthy brain and nerve functioning. Research indicates dogs are able to tolerate coconut oil quite well, though you should still consult with your veterinarian before feeding it to Fido, especially if he has a pre-existing health condition.

Our recommended dosage is about one teaspoon of coconut oil per 10 pounds of your dog’s total body weight per day. You’ll want to start out by using one-quarter of this amount, in order to slowly familiarize your dog’s digestive system with coconut oil and increase the amount you give him gradually.

Coconut oil can solidify our liquefy based on its temperature. It’s normal for your coconut oil to look white in the jar, but liquify once you scoop some into Sparky’s kibble. We suggest adding coconut oil to our salmon recipe for extra nourishment for your precious pup. The coconut oil beautifully complements our kibble which is rich in essential Omega-3 fatty acids. This combination will be sure to promote your pup’s healthy skin and sleek coat.
